Moorabbin Primary School No. 1111 dates back to 1875, making it one of the oldest schools in the district.  As a government school we have maintained high standards over a very long period.

Our core purpose is to nurture and develop the relationships between students, staff, parents and the wider community.  We foster the education and wellbeing of all through the provision of a safe, challenging, supportive and dynamic learning environment where all children are challenged to excel.  Our vision is that:  “We are learners for life, leading the way, who make the most of every day” and that Moorabbin Primary school is ‘The Place to Excel’.

We are learners for life, leading the way, who make the most of everyday” AND THAT Moorabbin Primary School is “The Place to Excel”.

We have a dedicated team of teachers who work in teams meeting the needs of all students through targeted teaching based on the results of on-going assessment.  We have daily time dedicated to the teaching of English and Mathematics. MSL is the approach used at Moorabbin Primary School.

Our curriculum is inline with the Victorian Curriculum.

In addition, we have a strong value system that underpins all that we do and is at the core of student, parents and teacher behaviour and our community. Moorabbin Primary School has specialist teachers for Music, Physical Education, Science, The Arts and Mandarin as well as an additional assistance program, Prep to 6.

School Values

Moorabbin Primary School has a core purpose to nurture and develop the relationships between students, staff, parents, and the wider community.  We foster the education and wellbeing of all through the provision of a safe, challenging, supportive and dynamic learning environment where all children are challenged to excel.  Our vision is that: “We are learners for life, leading the way, who make the most of everyday” AND THAT Moorabbin Primary School is “The Place to Excel”. The Moorabbin School Values are Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. These values incorporate what we stand for here at Moorabbin Primary school and they underpin everything that we do. Terrific is the acronym that our children will use as they refer to the values. Moorabbin kids are TERRIFIC kids!

The Terrific Kids character traits fall within the positive values of the Developmental Assets. As a student participating in the Terrific Kids program, it’s a good idea to practice using the Terrific Kids character traits at school and at home. This is part of being a Terrific Kid. The students and teachers will use these in the classroom, in the yard and they will form the basis of how we reward and award student behaviour at school.

We strive for all members of our community to be:

ThoughtfulTo consider the needs of others.

Enthusiastic: To be keen, eager and interested.

Respectful: To be polite and to care for self, others and our environment.

ResponsibleTo make good choices and accept the consequences of poor choices.

Inclusive: To respect the ideas and feelings of others.

Friendly: To be welcoming and kind to others.

Inquisitive: To wonder about the world.

Capable: To have-a-go and do your best.

School Features

  • For all of our new Prep children we have a buddy program so that they can get to know the school and some of the other children quickly to help them settle into school life. During the transition program held in the year before Preps start school, each child will be connected to another child in readiness for forming a relationship with them in their first year of school.

The buddies work together on different activities each week, they help them get to know the grounds and play with them on occasions.  You will see photos of the program in action when you come to visit the school.

  • We believe that every child can succeed and that means that some children may require additional time and support to achieve their best.

All teachers work with small needs based groups in their classes to differentiate the curriculum and better meet the needs of individual students. The school employs an additional assistance teacher to support students in literacy and are taught through specific and explicit teaching approach via MSL. additional assistance can be through intervention and extension. We place importance in ensuring students are also provided with opportunities to be extended through our enrichment programs provided to students who have been identified achieving 12 to 18 plus months ahead of their peers in the Victorian Curriculum. These classes occur once a week and are led by the Assistant Principal. Each classroom teacher also extends students through a differentiated program within their weekly teaching schedules.

  • As well as the core curriculum, Moorabbin Primary School offers a range of extra-curricular programs and lunch-time clubs.

After school hours a number of organisations use the school facilities to run programs for Primary aged children.  These include Art Club Mondays.

In addition, there are some lunch-time activities that run for different ages of children.  They include a garden club, coding club, colouring club art club, school choir along with a variety of sporting activities and training at different times of the year.

  • Moorabbin Primary School has an extensive transition program for students new to the school each year.

Starting in the year prior to the children’s start, there is a program for incoming Preps as well as one for students new to other levels of the school.

The Prep Transition Program begins early in the year to include a series of scheduled tours which can accommodate both children and parents.  Both group and individual tours are held on a regular basis.

Click to view School Tours Information.

We hold an information evening in May for Prospective parents so that they can get to know what the school offers.

Starting October of each year, we schedule a number of sessions that our incoming Preps attend. They include having time with each specialist teacher, spending several sessions in the Prep classes and finally working in the group they will be in for the coming year.

For students who transition to our school mid term there is an individual transition plan developed with the principal and parents to best suit the needs of the child transitioning. Every child’s needs are different and their are often set circumstances why families need to transition. Each child is buddied within their classroom to ensure they have a like minded group of students to support them as they transition into the school.

Facilities

Moorabbin Primary School has benefitted from significant upgrades to our facilities during the past few years.

We have a wonderful modern Learning Centre for our Prep - Two students. This centre has multi-purpose areas which include a vibrant Library which is fast becoming the hub of the school for research and reading fun.  The building also houses our additional assistance rooms.

We have a dedicated Senior Learning Centre located in the main building of the school with contemporary spaces designed for learning in large or small groups and using various types of technology.  It is furnished in bright colours with furniture designed to meet the needs of students learning in the 21st century.

Our year threes and fours are each located in spaces of their own which allow them to work together when required or work in separate classes as well. Again these spaces are well networked to have access to the latest technology.

The entire school is networked with wi-fi so that students can work using technology outside if so desired while still having access to core curriculum needs.

Our grounds are well kept and include a large grassed area at the front of the school which can be watered by an equally large storage tank of water.

The rear grassed areas have been freshly upgraded and are a pleasure to use.  Both mature trees as well as newly planted ones surround our school.

The school also boasts a range of play equipment and a large sandpit which is there for the use of all students.

We have a hall which is used for any manner of things from Dance to Drama and Physical Education and assemblies.  In addition, there is a Music room, Art room and a language room where Mandarin is taught.

Student Voice and Agency

At Moorabbin Primary School we are committed to providing our students with a learning environment that inspires them to be their best. An important aspect of school life at Moorabbin Primary School is developing student voice and agency, enabling our students to be active contributors in their learning and decision making in our school community. As detailed in the Department of Education ‘Amplify’ document,

“All students are empowered to learn and achieve, experiencing high quality teaching practice and the best conditions for learning which equip them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions for lifelong learning and shaping the world around them”. Victoria’s vision for learning (Department of Education and Training, 2018)

Student voice is not simply about giving students the opportunity to communicate ideas and opinions; it is about students having the power to influence change. Authentic student voice provides opportunities for students to collaborate and make decisions, with adults, around what and how they learn and how their learning is assessed. This is known to lead to improved educational outcomes.

Student agency refers to the level of autonomy and power that a student experiences in the learning environment. Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning, creating independent and self-regulating learners.

Moorabbin Primary Schools sustainability journey

MPS students sustainability video

Moorabbin Primary School recognises the importance of becoming a sustainable School for the benefit of the planet’s environmental health. Our goal is to manage resources efficiently and integrate sustainable practices by educating and motivating the whole School community to live more sustainably.

This year the school is embarking on becoming a “Five Star Sustainable” School and is currently working towards achieving its accreditation for becoming a “Resource Smart” School.

Our Fabulous Environment

Moorabbin Primary School has a long history of being part of the market garden community during the early 20th century. The school was built in 1873 and teaching children about sustainability in one form or another has been a priority across the years. The School has energy conservation and recycling programs designed to teach children the importance of sustainability. In addition, children learn the concepts which underpin sustainability in practical settings, understanding how plants grow and the impact of conservation in the local environment. Children undertake practical activities such as tree planting in conjunction with the National tree planting initiatives on offer and as part of our Year 6 graduation ceremony.

Sustainability Programs

Students are encouraged to be involved daily, weekly and annually in the Sustainability program at Moorabbin Primary School.

Daily sustainability activities include:

  • Taking responsibility for conserving energy and our environment through being monitors for lights, power and water usage.

  • Emptying "saved" water from their drinking taps

  • Encouraging students, grades and families to bring wrapper-free lunches through our "Nude Food" program

Weekly sustainability activities include:

  • Participating in the schools gardening program through the planting and cultivating experience.
